The Original PloProf
In conjunction with Jacques Cousteau, Omega developed a waterproof watch for use by the diving professional. Produced in 1970, the watch was nicknamed PloProf and the term derives from the French term PLOngeur PROFessionnel (Professional Diver).
The PloProf case is unique in the sense that it was created from a solid piece of stainless steel, “monobloc.” The bezel insert is made from “bakelite” that was poured into the stainless steel bezel. The dial features an oversized minute hand in orange. This helped the diver concentrate on the minutes for his dives.
Jacques Cousteau conducted a series of diving experiments wearing the Omega PloProf. At the time, this watch was very expensive and at the top for Omega. The PloProf was only produced for about 9 years and has since been collected and considered “rare.”
